Born in Paris in 1881 to a Scottish mother and a French father, Behrend’s early years were shaped by a constant search for purpose. After losing her husband, she set out across the world to find answers, exploring different spiritual paths. She briefly studied Christian Science under Mary Baker Eddy and met Abdul Baha, a key figure in the Baháʼí Faith, who predicted she would one day “travel the world over seeking the truth, and when [she] had found it, would speak it out.” This came true when Behrend encountered the lectures of Thomas Troward, a retired English judge whose bold ideas on Mental Science gripped her. Determined to study with him, she pictured her way to England—despite having no money—by imagining counting out twenty $1,000 bills each day until she found a way to make the trip. From 1912 to 1914, she became Troward’s only personal student, learning his philosophy in Cornwall, England, before returning to the United States to share it with others.
Beyond what’s covered in Your Invisible Power, Behrend’s life was one of tireless effort. After her time with Troward, she started The School of the Builders in New York City around 1915, running it until 1925. She later set up another school in Los Angeles and spent 35 years speaking across North America, holding audiences with her lively presence and radio talks that reached millions. Her half-Scottish roots and French upbringing gave her a rare mix of practical sense and fire, which comes through in her work. Behrend’s impact lives on as someone who brought big ideas about the mind to everyday people.
